In the spotlight: Elizabeth Beckett

This week we spoke to Elizabeth Beckett, of Elizabeth Beckett Skincare, about her business journey and some advice for other small business start-ups.

How long have you been running your business?

5 years.

How did Elizabeth Beckett start?

Having worked for many years in air conditioned offices doing long hours my skin had become dull and dehydrated. I tried all sorts of lotions and creams spending hundreds of pounds yet still had problem skin.  I decided if high street products weren’t helping then I would go back to basics and make my own.  My brother grew rapeseed oil on his farm so it seemed a perfect ingredient to start with and after some experimenting a cream was born.

Describe EB skincare?

Skin needs basic moisture which we feel should come from a natural source not to be chemical based. All our products are paraben, palm oil and SLS free (sodium lauryl sulphate ) , it’s vegan friendly with no artificial colouring. Our creams are bursting with natural goodness from the rapeseed oil to the essential oils used for fragrance every  ingredient must “ work” for its place and every cream must be gentle enough to use anywhere on the body and on any skin type.

Our intention is to make quality products we are pleased to use and confident to recommend to others.

What are the biggest challenges in running a small business?

The biggest challenge we have is competing against huge multinational companies. With a well known brand name and plenty of jargon they can sell skincare products without the customer ever questioning the creams content or performance. Elibec strives to be honest in every way .

What are you most proud of?

This one is easy. Earlier this week we delivered a selection of creams to Severn Hospice for distribution amongst the patients.  Not only is it a wonderful feeling to give to others less fortunate but getting the red light to do this proves what a pure and natural product we produce. Patients undergoing cancer treatment are told to use scent free simple products so to be told they could use Elibec skincare is a huge thing.

Have you got advice to someone thinking of starting up a business?

The most important thing when considering setting up your own business is to be passionate about what your doing.  It’s hard to “sell” at any time but if you’ve any doubts it becomes impossible.  Also talk to other people , it’s amazing what useful advice you can pick up.

What are your plans for EB Skincare?

We hope to continue growing in the future and to increase our range of products.

What is your favourite product in the range?

My favourite product is the Facial oil with Rose and Frankincense. Having avoided oils for many years I was amazed to discover how beautifully it massages into the skin leaving it feeling moisturised but not at all greasy.  It really is a small bottle of powerful liquid gold that protects as well as hydrating the skin.

Why should you buy EB skincare this Christmas?

There is nothing better than buying a gift that keeps on giving. With essential oils that are high in healing properties, Rose being antiseptic, lavender - antiseptic, antibacterial and calming, chamomile, soothing and calming, frankincense, tranquil and revitalising, peppermint, antiseptic and antibacterial our creams keep working throughout the day and night. With the partying of the festive season keeping your skin in good condition can be quite a challenge but with a product that hydrates deep into your cells your skin can look as bright and refreshed at the end of the night as it did at the beginning.
