Shropshire is walking country – the finest there is, and during May and June there are so many opportunities to join in special walks and outdoor activities.  Here’s just a taste.

28th May is the annual Bridgnorth Lions Walk, a challenging 22 mile walk through the Shropshire countryside starting from Bridgnorth High Street at 10.00am.  Over £100K is raised annually for charities chosen by individual walkers or walking teams.  There is a 7 mile Junior event as well.  There is lots to do for spectators and supporters on that day with fun for all the family in the lovely town of Bridgnorth. www.facebook.com/bridgnorthwalk Now something for anyone aged 6+.  

The Great Big Tree Climb at the National Trust’s Dudmaston Estate on the outskirts of Bridgnorth is a great experience.  Safely harnessed, climb your way to the treetops for a panoramic view of the beautiful Dudmaston Estate.  Even better – you can zip line back down!  30th and 31st May 10-5. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dudmaston

On 3rd June is the annual Telford Race for Life, raising money for Cancer Research.  Be part of what has become a fun filled and worthwhile national institution.  The Race (or Walk – your choice) will take place at Telford Town Park. www.raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org And a BRAND NEW event at the The Edge Adventure Centre, Much Wenlock.  Race on the Edge is organised by The Wenlock Olympian Society and will be held on 3 June 10.30am-1.30pm.  Test yourself with  9 miles of challenging off road racing along the magnificent Wenlock Edge. www.theedgeadventure.co.uk 

  There’ll be another off road run on 10th June in Severn Valley Country Park. The Severn Valley Trail Run along the River Severn will take you through meadows and woodlands, over climbs and with great views all along the way.  There’ll be water and snacks provided along the way – you’ll be well looked after.  And there are Prizes!  The event starts at 10.00am. www.stuweb.co.uk Also on 10th June is something the kids will ADORE.  The Colour Run 2018 takes place in Telford Town Park.     Walk, run, it really doesn’t matter but be prepared for a messy, colourful 5K of family fun.  www.severnhospice.org.uk Off to Shrewsbury for a well-established event, the Shrewsbury Half Marathon, taking place at Shropshire County Showground.

It’s on 17th June and is an all day event starting at 9am.  Runners of all abilities are invited to attend to enjoy this spectacular setting.  www.shrewsburyhalf.co.uk/ On 21st June, the Church Stretton Walking Festival  invites you a series of fun, interesting and educational walks……… Nordic Walking anyone?  Come and try it with a qualified instructor.  Nordic Walking poles provided for the walk along 2-3 miles of Shropshire countryside.  There will be some rough paths and some climbing.  Or take yourself to the  National Trust’s Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd.  Walk on the Wild Side gives you the opportunity to learn from the best as a wildlife specialist takes you to some of the best wildlife areas in this glorious and awe inspiring landscape.  21st June 10-3.  Or try the Geology Walk on that day.  Walking in a landscape which is 600 million years old with an abundance of diverse and significant geological features, learn about the land beneath your feet and all around you.  ‘Shropshire is regarded as the Geographical capital of Britain, and Church Stretton is the jewel in the Crown’. www.churchstrettonwalkingfestival.co.uk Whatever you choose to take part in, whatever you choose to watch, you’ll be welcome in Shropshire.  Let’s Get Active!
