Name: Richard Childs

Occupation:  Landscape Photographer

In three words describe your photography: Honest, dramatic, crafted

How did your photographic business start? A love of walking in wild places

Have you got a favourite image? What do you love about it? I’m very critical of my work and to date have only two or three images that I’m truly happy with. One of these, Blue Skye Day, has even made it onto my own wall at home ( albeit for just a year). It portrays the true mood of the island and is of a location that, to my knowledge, I was the first to discover.

What is your best-selling image?  Light and Shadow, Loch Etive. My first limited edition of 100 to sell out in little over one year.

What do you love most about running your photographic business? The variety, it’s a double edged sword sometimes as I’m dealing with things as diverse as planning camping locations for optimum dawn light images to liaising with hotels to make sure that my workshop clients’ precise dietary needs are met to helping framing customers match my hand stained frames to their carpet samples and writing articles for photographic magazines. I wouldn’t have it any other way though.

With all that has been achieved in your career so far, what are you most proud of? Sticking at it despite the many knock backs that you take in the creative arts world.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own creative business? Be patient and plan to expand slowly rather than rushing.

What are your plans for your business this year? Photographically I plan to spend much more time photographing the Welsh hills in preparation for a book release. At the gallery I want to concentrate on creating a ‘go to’ venue in Shropshire and further afield for viewing photography at the  highest standard. I hope to attract more artists to use my printing and picture framing services too.
