Much Wenlock

Small but perfectly formed, this medieval market town has a significant place in history, home as it is to the founding of the modern Olympic Games.
It was here that Dr William Penny Brookes inaugurated the Wenlock Olympian Games founded on classical principles.
This, in turn, inspired the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Today, visitors can follow the  Olympian Trail round the town.

Also of exceptional note is Wenlock Priory, once a Saxon site and now the fascinating ruins of the later medieval priory.
And do not miss the Guildhall, dating from 1540. The museum is also a real gem.

With its wonderful independent shops, pubs, hotels and cafes set around its High Street and Square,
its beautiful walks and its history, visitors can spend a thoroughly enjoyable time here.
