A Year in Shropshire by Shropshire and Beyond

Taking photographs is a family affair for Mike and John Hayward. This father-and-son team spend their working lives criss-crossing Shropshire on an endless mission to to capture the county in all its glory.

As joint owners of the Shropshire and Beyond picture library they are out and about in all seasons and all weathers, determined not to miss an opportunity to photograph a spectacular summer sunset or a frosty dawn landscape.

They seek out remote locations as well as bustling towns and tiny villages, while taking particular delight in capturing the dramatic scenery of the Shropshire Hills.

Now, their photographs have been brought together in A Year in Shropshire, a new book that showcases the county in more than 160 images.

The pictures reveal Mike and John’s love of their home county, but do not always reflect the sheer effort and hard work on the other side of the camera.

Tales involving ridiculously early starts on icy winter mornings are legion, as are the long, tedious hours spent waiting for the sun to come out from behind a cloud.

However, working on the book has been a labour of love for both of them. They just hope they have done justice to the county they are so very happy to call home.

A Year in Shropshire, by Mike and John Hayward, is published by Merlin Unwin Books on September 5, price £20.
